On top of Dolby Atmos

Here to replace the 2015 flagship ST9 sound bar is the Sony HT-ST5000. Announced at CES 2017, the sound bar immediately caught the attention of Sony fans for its inclusion of Dolby Atmos and for also its lack of DTS.

How could the more premier flagship sound bar from Sony offer Dolby Atmos but not any DTS audio options? As it turns out and as I argued online many times, it was simply a matter of timing and something that would eventually be addressed via a firmware update.

Rasmus Larsen writes this for flatpanelshd:

ST5000 has a total output of 800W in 7.1.2 channels with the last two referring to the roof-firing speakers. It comes with an external subwoofer that connects wirelessly. The soundbar also supports Hi-Res sound and Sony Pictures Entertainment has helped calibrate it. Update 27.7.2017 Sony has sent us a statement confirming that HT-ST5000 will get “DTS:X via a firmware update in 2017”.

And there you go folks. The magic of firmware updates. One thing Sony needs to get better at is handling their roadmap strategy. If DTS was always in the pipleine for the ST5000, why deal with the bad press of not having it when they could have simply said it would arrive at a later date? Now Sony has to rely on this bit of information getting out there which won’t nearly have as much traction, seeing how a majority of the coverage for their flagship sound bar has long been done.

How many people do you think opted to buy something else because of the initial news who may have otherwise bought the ST5000 because they didn’t think it offered DTS?
